Thailand

A Thai surrealist who studied Humanities and foreign languages, taught himself design, lost a graphic design job to COVID, and sold his first NFTs in 2021 to his own surprise. He rebuilds public-domain Renaissance and Baroque paintings into new scenes, Bosch and Magritte in one breath, and his Echoes of Self series turned that lens inward. Shown from NFTNYC to Art Basel Miami and Sotheby's. This vault holds three of his works, one of them sent by the artist himself.

Artist statement in their own words, sent to the collector, September 2026

1dontknows is a Thai artist based in Thailand. I mainly work with digital collage, mixed media, and surreal imagery. I actually didn’t come from an art or design background. I studied Humanities, focusing on Foreign Languages. I only started getting seriously interested in art and design around 2019–2020, when I decided to try something outside of what I had been doing. I realized that I really enjoyed creative work, so I applied for a graphic design job in Thailand. From there, I started learning and practicing by myself. I didn’t really have any formal training in art or design, so most of what I know came from experimenting, practicing, and figuring things out on my own. Then COVID happened. The company I was working for had to cut costs and reduce the team, and I was one of the people who lost my job. Around 2021, I started hearing about NFTs from a friend of mine. At that time, I had already been making artworks for fun while I was working, so I decided to put some of them online and see what happened. Some of the works actually sold, which honestly surprised me. That was when I started thinking that maybe I could really do this as a career. I kept practicing, learning, and experimenting, and eventually decided to take the leap and become a full-time artist. So something that started as a hobby eventually became my main job, and I’ve been doing it ever since.

About My Art

I’ve always been interested in older paintings, especially from the Renaissance, Baroque, and Neoclassical periods. I really like the way those paintings tell stories through their composition, characters, expressions, and small details. I’m also a big fan of Surrealism, especially artists like Hieronymus Bosch, René Magritte, and Salvador Dalí. My work is kind of where these two interests meet. I take images from older classical paintings and mix them with surreal ideas to create new scenes and stories. I like taking something that people might recognize and putting it into a completely different situation. Sometimes the result feels beautiful, sometimes strange, and sometimes a little dark. I think that contrast is something I naturally enjoy. A lot of my works feel like they could be scenes from another world or from a story that we only get to see one moment of. I don’t always want to explain exactly what that world is. I like leaving some space for the viewer to make their own interpretation.

My Process

Most of my work starts with finding images. I mainly use public-domain images, especially old paintings and classical artworks. I take those images and rebuild them into something completely new. I change the composition, combine different paintings and elements, remove things, add new things, and basically keep working until a new scene starts to make sense. Some works are made mostly through collage, while others have more digital painting involved. So I would describe my work as mixed media, even though everything is created digitally. I don’t always start with a clear idea of what the final artwork will look like. Sometimes I just find an image that I really like and start playing around with it. The story can develop while I’m working. Finding the right image is actually a big part of my process. Sometimes I already know exactly what I need, but I just can’t find it anywhere. That’s also where I’ve recently started using AI. I don’t use AI to create the whole artwork. I mainly use it when I need a specific element that I can’t find anywhere else. I might generate that one element and then bring it into my work, edit it, combine it with other images, and make it fit into the final piece. I’m also starting to learn more about animation and how I can bring some of my works to life. But I still really love still images. There’s something interesting about showing just one frozen moment and letting people imagine what happened before or what might happen next.

What I Want to Explore

What I explore really depends on what I’m feeling, what’s happening in my life, or simply what I’m interested in at that particular time. Some periods naturally lead me to make darker and more personal work. Sometimes I’m trying to understand myself or certain feelings, and those things end up appearing in the artwork without me necessarily planning it. My Echoes of Self collection is probably one of the clearest examples. It was about looking at identity from different angles and exploring different versions or parts of yourself. But it doesn’t always have to be something that personal. Sometimes an idea can come from a song, a poem, a movie, something I read, or even just an image that catches my attention. I like taking those things and turning them into something visual. I don’t necessarily want to directly illustrate a song or tell people exactly what a piece is supposed to mean. I’d rather take the feeling or idea that I got from it and turn that into a new story. I think that’s one of the reasons I like surrealism so much. It gives me a lot of freedom to talk about things that are difficult to explain normally. I’m still figuring out what I want to explore, and I think that’s part of the fun. My work changes as I change, so I don’t really want to limit myself to one subject or one meaning.

A Little More About My Journey

Since becoming a full-time artist, my work has been shown in different exhibitions and events internationally, including Thailand, the US, the UK, France, Switzerland, and Turkey. I’ve had the opportunity to exhibit through different galleries, platforms, and art events, including NFTNYC, Art Basel Miami, Miami Art Week, and Sotheby’s. But honestly, the part I find most interesting is how unexpected the whole journey has been. I didn’t study art. I didn’t really plan to become an artist when I graduated. I started making things because I enjoyed it, learned everything by myself, and then somehow that hobby turned into my full-time career. I’m still learning and trying new things, and I think that’s probably what keeps me interested in making art.
