Kolmanskop was once a prosperous diamond mining town. When the diamonds were gone, the town was no longer needed. People left everything behind and moved on. The desert moved in slowly. Grain by grain, sand began to fill the empty rooms, quietly eating away at the boundaries between what belonged to people and what belonged to nature. This place fascinated me long before I arrived there. I had seen countless photographs of these buried houses, yet standing inside them felt completely different. There was no sense of decay or tragedy—only the quiet realization that time always wins, and nature is far more patient than we are.
