Pepe Adrift on Moonlit Waves

Echoing the elegant rhythm and abstraction of Ogata Kōrin’s Matsushima folding screens, this diptych reimagines the iconic golden waves of the Rinpa school through the wandering figure of Pepe. On the right panel, under a crescent moon suspended in a burnished gold sky, Pepe drifts alone in a small wooden boat, his melancholic gaze contrasting with the majestic, stylized currents that surround him. The left panel balances the composition with a single lotus blooming amid the dark, lacquer-like waters, an emblem of spiritual awakening within turmoil. The work blends the decorative sophistication of early 18th-century Rinpa aesthetics, the sinuous wave patterns, mineral-pigment textures, and gold-leaf atmosphere, with contemporary visual culture, transforming Pepe into a solitary voyager navigating uncertainty, introspection, and the vastness of the self.
