Barbara Chira, Misfits Studio
Barbara Chira (Misfits Studio) is an AI video artist whose practice explores the perceptual logic of image-to-video generators—what these systems produce when allowed to animate according to their own internal rationale. Rather than illustrating prewritten narratives, Chira sets visual conditions that invite AI to express itself in its own “native” visual language. While the finished works reflect Chira’s artistic voice and compositional guidance, they resist directing the viewer toward a single meaning. Chira’s earlier AI videos are cinematic, surreal, and emotionally charged, blending psychological, historical, and socio-political references with uncanny domesticity and altered landscapes. She has exhibited internationally, including in Cannes, collaborated on a music video for Vanessa Williams, and consulted for universities. Prior to AI, she spent over 20 years creating installations and community-engaged works, serving 17 years as a college art professor and program head.
